Summary of RWOF Legislative Activity 2006
Lois Hoyt, Legislative Committee Chairwoman

FFRW identified several bills which they urged the clubs to support and lobby the legislators.   They included S486, relating to verification of Identity; S82, Immunizations; Eminent Domain (several versions) and HB 519, Internet Screening in Public Libraries.  They also asked us to contact Speaker of the House Allan Bense to allow HB251, Sexual Predator Elimination Act of 2006, to be offered as an amendment to another bill.  The language would ensure that sexual predators that commit sexual battery against a child 12years old or younger, receive life in prison with no option for parole.  The information was distributed at a meeting and I emailed him as did others

We were requested to contact Holly Benson , Chairman of the Health and Families Council to have the immunization bill, HO491, similar to S82,  placed on the Committee Agenda.  The bill would prohibit vaccinating a woman who is knowingly pregnant or child who is younger than a specified age with vaccine that contains any mercury, due to concern about mercury in vaccines contributing to autism in children.  I contacted Rep. Benson on behalf of RWO and she responded that she would

Other activity involved developing a RWO position on Eminent Domain based on a bill the previous year by Rep. Everett Rice.  We encouraged our legislators to pass legislation to provide that taking private property through eminent domain does not constitute public purpose if the primary purpose of taking it is for economic development or to benefit particular individuals.  A version was passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Bush.   FFRW said they would provide a legislative report, update and action wrap on these bills but, due to other preoccupations, none were sent by the legislative Chair Judith Albertelli.

Federal legislation that was briefed to the membership included immigration reform and updates on legislation affecting military retirees: survivor Benefit Plan and DIC offsets, and VA clinic at Eglin update.  Legislative Briefings were also provided by U.S. Rep. Miller and Sens. Clary and Don Gaetz.
